Oral Hygiene Rules When Aligning Your Teeth With Braces

Posted .

Are you aligning your smile with braces? If so, then you need to do all you can to maintain strong and healthy teeth and gums as well as a top-notch orthodontic appliance. The more you care for your mouth and braces, the better chance you have of having a successful orthodontic treatment. So, our dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Neal, is happy to give you the oral hygiene instructions you need to meet your goals. Those instructions are:

No. 1: Brush your teeth regularly. It’s strongly recommended to brush after each time you eat. This means you need to pack your toothbrush and toothpaste with you. Brushing regularly can remove food, plaque and debris from your teeth, gums and braces to give you the top-notch oral health and appliance you need. To perform a thorough and complete brushing, use interdental brushes to clean the hard-to-reach spaces.

No. 2: Floss your teeth often. It’s very important to floss at least once a day. However, if you can floss more, please do so. Flossing can help you remove harmful substances from between your teeth, along the gumline and around your braces. Flossing is vital for a top-notch oral health and orthodontic treatment.

No. 3: Attend your regular dental checkups. Dental cleanings and exams can help you prevent dental issues (like tooth decay and gum disease) and it can even help you keep your braces in the best condition possible, especially because the cleaning removes the hardened plaque from around your braces brackets. So, make sure to attend your appointments every six months.

As long as you keep up on oral hygiene, have an appliance-friendly diet and follow our dentist’s instructions, you can have a successful and convenient orthodontic treatment and you can increase your chances of reaching the smile you have always wanted.
